In the wake of the June 2022 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization eliminating the constitutional right to an abortion after almost 50 years, the need for philanthropic funding to ensure equity in reproductive health care has surged.
Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, as of October 2023, 14 states have essentially banned abortion, seven states have restricted the procedure earlier than the standard set by Roe, and another four states are expected to do so, with disproportionate impacts on marginalized communities. Nonprofits in this space are pivoting to adapt to evolving laws and needs, and funders are prioritizing flexible support, including for travel funds, infrastructure, legal defense, state-level and local efforts, and advocacy funding.
